BIOGRAPHY OF THE REV. DR. TAURUS KING SCURLOCK
The Rev. Dr. Taurus King Scurlock was born and raised on the Westside of Chicago. He was educated in the Chicago Public School system and is a proud graduate of Taft High School. He is the middle of three children all three years apart born to King Solomon and Inell Scurlock. Both parents instilled in Dr. Scurlock a fear of God in addition to modeling hard work and “studying to show thyself approved!”
Dr. Scurlock is a life-long educator, serving two decades as a teacher and administrator on every level of education from Kindergarten to the University level. He has held faculty and or administrative positions at Proviso West High School, ACT Charter School, and Crete-Monee High School. In addition, Dr. Scurlock has taught or continues to teach at the following post-secondary institutions, Waubonsee Community College, DeVry University, and the Seminary Consortium for Urban Pastoral Education (SCUPE). Currently, Dr. Scurlock is an Adjunct Professor at the College of DuPage where he teaches in both the Religion and the Philosophy Departments.
Dr. Scurlock began to hear the Lord speaking to him and he answered his calling to ministry on Mother’s Day 1991. He preached his trial sermon on July 4th entitled Are you following Jesus? (Luke 9:57-62) The Lord then bestowed upon Dr. Scurlock his initial ministerial call as the very first Youth Pastor of the historic Third Baptist Church of Chicago under the leadership of the Rev. Dr. Alan V. Ragland, Pastor Emeritus where he would serve faithfully until 2004. Under Dr. Scurlock, the ministry grew to nearly 300 children and more than 40 volunteer staff, making it one of the largest Youth ministries in Chicago! In the fall of 2004 God called him to Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Evanston, Illinois to succeed the legendary and prophetic Dr. J. Frederick Norwood as he moved into the title of Pastor Emeritus.
At Mount Zion, Dr. Scurlock’s ministry has resulted in much spiritual growth. Many new ministries were launched such as the Disciple Ministry which is now embraced in several churches in Evanston. In addition, many infrastructure improvements have been made to the church as well such as the renovation of the sanctuary and the bathrooms. Dr. Scurlock holds the following degrees, B.A. from the University of Illinois at Chicago, M.B.A. Keller Graduate School of Management, Master of Divinity and the Doctor of Ministry both from the McCormick Theological Seminary.
Dr. Scurlock is very happily married to the former Lorna Beth Coleman for more than two decades. She is currently a speech therapist in the Elgin Public School district, a position she has held for over two decades. Lorna has been a faithful partner in ministry and in life! God blessed the Scurlocks’ with their miracle baby Jocelyn in 2006, who is now a proud middle schooler and active member of the Mount Zion youth ministry! Dr. Scurlock’s favorite scripture is Psalm 25:9-He leads the humble in what is right and teaches the humble His way.
